1967: After shooting down his F-100 Super Sabre, the North Vietnamese captured Maj George E. “Bud” Day. They took him to a prison camp for interrogation and torture. Despite crippling injuries, Day escaped and evaded the enemy for two weeks. He eventually crossed the demilitarized zone and came within two miles of a Marine Corps base before he was shot and captured again. He continued to resist his captors until he was released in 1973. For that action, he received the Medal of Honor.
