2005: From Charleston AFB, S.C., 17 C-17s from the 437th Airlift Wing and the 315th Airlift Wing–the largest formation of C-17 Globemaster IIIs to take off from a single base–launched into the morning skies to demonstrate the USAF’s strategic airdrop capability. The previous record was 15 C-17s from McChord AFB, Wash. The training formation left the base to locations around the southeast to perform required quarterly, semiannual, and end-of-year training.
