1912: First Aero Club of America licensed woman pilot, Harriet Quimby, flew the English Channel. Quimby took off from Dover, England, in route to Calais, France, and made the flight in 59 minutes, landing about 25 miles from Pas-de-Calais. She was the first woman to pilot an aircraft across the English Channel. Her accomplishment received little attention as it occurred the day after the sinking of the Titanic ocean liner.
