1945: During this Eighth Air Force raid, more than 1,200 B-17s and B-24s launch to attack marshalling yards in Berlin as well as a synthetic oil plant and transportation targets in Magdeburg. More than 900 escort fighters provide top cover. The mission against Berlin, which includes 959 of the dispatched bombers, is the largest of the war thus far. The Mighty Eighth will deliver a similar blow to the same target area three days later.
