1949: The USAF transferred ownership of the Boeing B-29, Enola Gay, the Boeing B-29 that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, to the Smithsonian Institution. The aircraft remained in storage until restoration efforts began in the 1990s. Today, the Plane rests in the Udvar-Hazy Center as the anchor for the WW II display area.
