1960: Explorer 8, an ionospheric measuring satellite, launched from Cape Canaveral into a 20-50 year orbit by a four-stage Juno II rocket combination. Explorer 8 was intended to study a variety of phenomenon in the ionosphere at altitudes between 250 and 990 miles and their variation from full sun to full shade conditions. (NASA Image)
