1949: On this date, aircraft participating in the Berlin Airlift carried a record 12,940 tons of supplies by air in 24-hours to provide relief for those cut off by the Soviet Blockade (24 June 1948-12 May 1949). The Berlin Blockade was one of the first major international crises of the Cold War.
