On This Day in History / August 2, 2024 1911: Miss Harriet Quimby earned the first pilot’s license ever issued to a woman by the Aero Club of America, and the second ever earned anywhere by a woman. She received number 37 at Mineola. She had passed the test the day before. Quimby (May 11, 1875 – July 1, 1912) was an American pioneering aviator, journalist, and film screenwriter. In 1912, she became the first woman to fly across the English Channel. Although Quimby died at the age of 37 in a flying accident, she strongly influenced the role of women in aviation.
