On This Day in History / August 26, 2024 1967: After shooting down his F-100 Super Sabre, the North Vietnamese captured Maj George E. “Bud” Day. They took him to a prison camp for interrogation and torture. Despite crippling injuries, Day escaped and evaded the enemy for two weeks. He eventually crossed the demilitarized zone and came within two miles of a Marine Corps base before he was shot and captured again. He continued to resist his captors until released in 1973. For that action, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Day was a veteran of World War II, Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
