1941: Lt. Boyd D. “Buzz” Wagner becomes the first American “Ace” of World War II. A member of the 17th Pursuit Squadron, flying a P-40, he shoots down his fifth enemy aircraft in air-to-air fighting in the Philippines earning a Distinguished Service Cross.
