1968: During the period 21-27 December, Apollo 8, a NASA mission designed to orbit the Moon, is launched from Cape Kennedy, Florida. On board are USAF Colonels Frank Borman and William Anders with Navy Captain James Lovell, Jr. This marks the first time in history that a manned spacecraft departs Earth orbit.
