1942: Supporting the British First Army’s march into Tunisia, Twelfth Air Force C-47s drop British paratroopers near Souk el Arba. Additionally, six B-17s of the 97th Bomb group in Algiers flies a raid on Sidi Ahmed airfield at Bizert. The 97th flew the first heavy bomber mission against enemy targets from the United Kingdom on August 17th, now, having been transferred to the Twelfth, flies their first combat mission in Africa as well.
