1962: The Department of Defense awards General Dynamics and Grumman the prime contract for the Tactical Fighter Experimental (TFX). The variable-swept-wing twin-engine jet fighter is to carry 20,000 pounds of weapons and travel at Mach 2.5. This will become the F-111 “Aardvark” fighter for the Air Force.
