17-22 October 1962: During this tense period—known as the Cuban Missile Crisis—seven U-2 missions are flown over Cuba daily to monitor Soviet missile movements there. RF-101C and Navy RF-8 aircraft carry out low-level reconnaissance missions which uncover Soviet weapons located at Cuban airfields.
