On This Day in History / October 6, 2022 1918: Lt Harold E. Goettler (pilot) and Lt Erwin R. Bleckley (observer), U.S. Army Air Corps, 50th Aero Squadron, Air Service died immediately after their plane was shot down near Binarville, France in an attempt to resupply the Army’s 77th Division—The Lost Battalion. Both Airmen were posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
