1961: The National Reconnaissance Office was created to oversee the USAF and CIA’s reconnaissance efforts. Initially operating with a small staff out of room 4C100 in the Pentagon, the organization initially oversaw Air Force, CIA and Navy satellite programs as well as aerial reconnaissance platforms like the U-2, A-12, and SR-71.
