2nd Lt Walter E. Truemper of the U.S. Army Air Corps, 510th Bomber Squadron, 351st Bomber Group served as a navigator on a bombing mission over Europe that was severely damaged by a squadron of enemy fighters, killing the copilot outright. 2nd Lt Truemper and the crew managed to fly the plane back to the home station and he attempted to land the plane and died on the third attempt after ordering the rest of the crew to bail because the pilot was still alive but could not bail.
Sgt. Archibald Mathies of the U.S. Army Air Corps, 510th Bomber Squadron, 351st Bomber Group. In an attack over Europe, the pilot was wounded, and the copilot was killed. Sgt.
