On This Day in History / July 2, 2024 1943: Lt Charles Blakesly “Buster” Hall, 99th Fighter Squadron, became the first US black pilot to shoot down an Axis plane, a German Focke-Wulf 190 over Sicily. General Dwight D. Eisenhower personally met and congratulated Hall on his victory. Hall also became the first African American combat fighter pilot to earn the Distinguished Flying Cross.
