1943: Lt. Gen. Frank M. Andrews is killed when his aircraft crashes into the side of a mountain in Iceland. Andrews was the Commanding General, European Theater of Operations, U.S. Army and had been instrumental in educating Army senior staff officers in the use of American airpower.
